Waiting So Long by Kaenar Langford

Title: Waiting So Long
Author: Kaenar Langford
Age Groups: Mature Adults
Rating: 7.5
Couple: M/M

Synopsis: Growing up, Vayle’s best friend’s younger brother Daniel was a pain in the ass. When Daniel shows up on Vayle’s doorstep, expecting to stay with him for a few days, Vayle discovers the last twelve years have transformed Daniel from a gangly, awkward pain in the ass into a confident, smoking-hot stud.
Daniel’s only too happy to see Vayle again, but the prospect of being roommates with his first love has his stomach in knots…and his cock throbbing. This time around, Daniel’s determined to win Vayle over—even if it means getting down on his knees to beg properly.

Review: The book was cute. It starts out a little slow but the attraction is there immediately. You get a real sense of who the two characters are in this book. Yes, it is an erotica so there is A LOT of sex. TONS. At 111 pages, it borders on almost too much. But there is a difference with every scene that makes it really easy to not get bored with it. The characters are likable. I have no problem with them but they felt a little... flat. The younger one you know almost nothing about except that he is the younger brother and had a very serious infatuation with the other character at a young age. The older character has a little bit more depth with his ex that left him and he was just trying to stay busy while his broken heart healed. That was really sweet. I got it. I connected. But that didn't come until the last few pages. And all in about 5 pages. It was just a lot to take in with such a little amount of page numbers.
There was also no outside plot. This was an entirely character driven story and one that was well done. The main conflict is figuring out how this relationship will work. There was an epilogue. It showed that they were still together and were still very much in love. It was sweet. Not really an insight on how they were making it work, but with it being so touching that almost didn't matter.
In summation, it was cute. It made a tug at your heart strings. That's about it.

Cautions: Very graphic sex.  And a lot of it.  A ton.

HEA: Yea, I guess.  Things are still a little sad for them at the ending but they seem like they are getting through it.

Perfect Score by Susan Roebuck

Title: Perfect Score
Author: Susan Roebuck
Age Group: Mature Teens to Adults
Rating: 7
Couple: M/M

Synopsis: Alex and Sam are opposites. Alex has money while Sam barely understands the concept. Alex meets Sam while trying to reconcile two sides of his life, his music and what his family wants for him. Once he meets Sam, all he can think about is spending more and more time with him. While getting to know Sam, you figure out Sam has not had the easiest life: abuse and homelessness are just part of the baggage that Sam carries. After meeting, they attempt to try and take a little time for themselves but things keep getting in the way.

Review: Through most of this book I was just chugging along. The type of writing style was stream of thought. Which definitely fit well for this book, but I had a hard time following sometimes. There was a weird little back plot of an uncle taking advantage of the small town and trying to get Sam to take the fall. It was weird. Now, with that being said- the ending was so worth it. When they finally got together and had their little heart to heart I turned to mush. It was heartbreaking too- you'll see why- but I was super excited about the ending. Then the epilogue came. While the epilogue was told by a completely different character that I did NOT like, it was nice to be on the outside, looking in. It was adorable. The things they had gone through to be together and the things they had to keep hidden (this was the sixties after all) they managed to make a life and to have hopes on improving that life. I may not have been a fan of the writing style, the back plot was nothing to note, and some of the characters made me want to scream, but the way the heartbreak and resolution was written was amazing. I am glad I read the book just for that.

Cautions: None really.  Though it deals with a homosexual relationship there is no sex int he book and very little contact.

HEA: Yes, there is.  It is not until the epilogue and you see how their life was together and how they are fixing it because they are tired of being something they are not. It is adorable and by far my favorite part of the book.

Arson by

Author: Estevan Vega

Title: Arson
Author: Estevan Vega
Series: First in the Arson series
Age Group: Teems
Rating: 7
Couple: M/F

Synopsis: A boy who can start fires, a girl who wears a mask. An entire town that needs therapy and figuring out your place in the world. Nothing can go wrong, right?

Review: It took a little bit to get into this story. It was a little disjointed in the beginning. It was hard to get into the flow of the story, but once you were there it went just fine. This book is really angsty. Arson loathes himself and tries to fit in, but deep inside knows he is different. The Grandmother is really off her rocker. One minute she is sweet Grandma, the next minute she is a lunatic shouting things, and back again. The girl, Emery, is an out of control teenager. She was involved in an accident when shew as younger and now wears a scary mask so she doesn't feel vulnerable. While we have all toyed with the illusion that if no one can see who we really are, it wont hurt. We also all know how much of a pile of *()* that is. This girl manages to live that dream and you almost want to admire her for it. Except then she starts being an obnoxious teenager with the mentality that no one could possible understand. I have run into this with quite a few teenager and I think the author captured this mentality quite well. You almost admire her for how she braves the world, but then you see the way she treats people around her and you stop rooting for her. Her parents are having their own issues. You feel almost sad for them, until you realize they are doing it to themselves while simultaneously doing it to each other. There is not one great character. All are terribly flawed. I read a lot of comic books and this is actually a trait that I really like. I like knowing that everyone has something that needs monitoring to keep in check or you wouldn't recognize the person you become... But towards the end of this book, it got to be too much. Arson has the only redeeming quality shown in this book- and that does not come out til the very end of the book. The end of the book starts to get really disjointed again, the shift in perspectives happens frequently. Then the climax hits and the book is over... I think because it is a first book it is supposed to end in a cliffhanger but this one was... not a good one. It just made me mad. Not mad that I have to wait to read it... just mad.
I have heard that this author is quite young, early twenties, and I look forward to watching this author get more comfortable with a wider range of emotions. This is a YA novel, perhaps a younger generation would feel differently about this book. I may be in my mid twenties, but the teenage boy is not something I have ever pretended to understand.

Cautions: I think I covered in the review- but there is A LOT of angst.  There is A LOT of misplaced anger.  All of it comes to head late in the book and it is awful.

Series: This is the first in a series and I am seriously debating not reading them.  The second book just came out and I don't think I can handle that amount of anger.  It was truly too much.

HEA: No.  The bad stuff seems like it is just getting started.

Time Pirate by Trinity Blake

Title: Time Pirate
Author: Trinity Blake
Age Group: Mature Adults
Rating: 6
Couple: M/F

Synopsis: When a time traveling treasure hunter from the future crosses paths an infamous pirate from the past, sparks fly and passion ignites in this story of betrayal, redemption, and sexual awakening. After catching Rhaina in the act of stealing a priceless necklace, Captain Nate Graves keeps her captive in his cabin, demanding that she make restitution—with her body. Little does he know, Nate has been the object of Rhaina's erotic fantasies ever since she came across a copy of his portrait. While Rhaina wonders if she will survive his creative brand of punishment, Nate finds that the line between captor and captive is easily blurred, leaving him wondering who is really in control.

Review: I was really excited about this book. The concept was awesome. Time travel, a dangerous pirate and romance, what is not to love. This is what I got: A woman is a time traveler, so we get a little bit of background in that. Then we find out about her taking a job to time travel back to the Dark Phantom to steal a precious item. When she gets stuck there, she is caught by the captain and the adventure begins. He seduces her. She captivates him. They come to dry land where he lives and a huge misunderstanding occurs and she almost leaves him. They admit their love for each other and BAM! happily ever after. That's it. I think for the blurb and the potential for this book, it was really short. 98 pages is probably around average for an erotica (it's hard to make long stories with TONS of sex) but with all of the adventuring going on, everything felt rushed. But the dialogue sounded forced and took too much time to get through. Some of the actions in the book didn't make sense. She always seemed like a whiny little girl to me. But they spend almost no time trying to get to know each other. There's not even a passing of time that is skimmed over in the book. While it happens sometimes in romance novels that love is practically instantaneous... this seemed odd to me. Something I really do have to commend the author about is her descriptive qualities. I was always right there with what she was telling me and able to see what she wanted me to see. The bad guys were as gross as she wanted them to me as well as the hero being something I could imagine down to what his tattoo looked like. It was refreshing. I hate needing to fill in too much on my own. Some stuff is ok, but this author did a REALLY good job at just enough information.

Cautions: There was graphic sex in here.  Other than that it is a nice, fluffy read.  Lol.

HEA: Yes, there is a HEA.  Even if I think it is ridiculous.  I dunno.  I wasn't a fan of it.  It seemed a little TOO easy.  She didn't even THINK.  Although, maybe that had something to do with the love part... Perhaps.

Cheating Chance by James Buchanan

Title: Cheating Chance
Author: James Buchanan
Series: Taking the Odds #1
Age Group:  Mature adults
Rating: 8
Couple: M/M

Synopsis: Nick meets Brandon at a goth convention and sparks fly.  After keeping in contact, Brandon heads out to stay a weekend with Nick so they can have a few more days together.  When someone is murdered at the club they were at, things may become too complicated for this little relationship to make it.  They will need to learn to trust that the other person will be there when everything is said and done.

Review: The story was really adorable.  Nick was a great character to get to know and Brandon was so mixed up on something that it made you want to hug him to make it better.  The couple's interaction with each other made for enough tension to keep the story interesting but there was very little doubt about how they felt about each other. For the most part, throughout the story Brandon is a little standoffish and seems to not have as much invested into this relationship with Nick.  But at the end, when Brandon needs to get Nick out of trouble, there is no amount of pleading or negotiating that is too much.  This type of character development is SO nice to see.  Even if some other things are a little over the top.  Nick driving a hearse and Brandon giving in so easily in the ropes scene.  Overall though, it makes for a nice getaway from every day life.  It was serious, funny, hot and heartwarming all at the same time.  Well done.

Cautions: There is graphic sex.  Quite a bit of it.  Don't read it if this is not your thing or if two men make you uncomfortable.

Series: The first in a series of three.  I have not read the others but I am anxious to.

HEA: There is more of a happy for now.  They are only able to have a long distance relationship and Brandon is still not out by the end of the book.  I am hoping this stuff is resolved in the continuing books.

Matched by Ally Condie

Title: Matched
Author: Ally Condie
Series: Matched Series
Age Group: Young Adult to Adult
Rating: 8
Couple: M/F

Synopsis: In this unsuspecting 'utopia' people have all of their decisions made for them. Down to what they wear, what they eat, what recreational activities they do... and who they marry.  When a young girl finds out who her match is, she is very satisfied with her choice.  It happens to be someone that she has known her entire life.  When she gazes at his picture and it flashed to different boy, things only go downhill from there.

Review:  It was amazing.Ally Condie really sucked me into this world.  I found myself telling everyone about this book as I was reading it.  There were so many things that I was shocked to learn about, but it totally made me believe in this world.  Certain events in the book made me laugh and cry and shout with anger.  The entire book was a roller coaster of emotion while watching a little girl in this society grow in a woman who wants to do something about the things she sees wrong.  The people you meet in the book are so life like you are thinking of them as your friends and family by the end of the book.
I was at a slight disadvantage though when I started this book.  I had no idea it was a trilogy.  So I got to the end of the book and was PISSED.  Mostly because it was not an ending.  It was merely a break in the story telling.  I am as excited about this book as Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instrument installments. It does not come out until November.  So until then, I am holding my breath.

Cautions: Things are messed up.  If the reader is too young for this book, you will know why the way they do not imagine that that way of life is anything different than what they already experience.  At a younger age, a parent will choose what you eat and wear and hang out with.  That's all normal.  When freedom is introduced is when this book will be a mind blower.

Series:  This is a trilogy and this was book one.  Of course.  Book two (Crossed) comes out in November with the conclusion (not yet titled) a year later.  If everything goes right.

HEA: Nope.  Not even close.  There's not even anything in sight that can make me believe there is going to be one.

Eternity's Many Loves by Jayme Evans

Title:  Eternity's Many Loves
Author: Jayme Evans
Series: Eternity's Vampire Series
Age Group: Teen to Adult
Page Count: 353
Rating: 7
Couple: M/F

Summary: Ethan has lived for eternity.  Or at least that what it seems like to him.  Throughout his time he has fallen in love with a few women.  All of them have broken his heart and he refuses to love again. He has resolved that he will find a way to cure his vampirism so he can live out his life the way it was intended to do.  Then he meets Kristen and everything changes.  She is able to slip past his defenses and make his feel again.

Review: The story was really good.  There was great personalities with all of the secondary characters.  The plot was really fleshed out so you knew exactly what was happening without it giving anything away.  I admit, I was pleasantly surprised the way everything worked out at the end.  Once it got there I saw it coming (though it didn't take away from the story) but you didn't know about this through the whole book.  I liked that Ethan had emotional baggage that he had to get over in order to trust again.  This shows growth in a character which makes for a really great story.  Kristen didn't change all that much but the little progress she made was essential.  There was kind of a 2D bad guy which was a little bit of a let down.  I mean, I wanted more from the antagonist.  Even the small change at the end for his seemed forced.  I think that would be the biggest issue with this book.  Things seemed to be forced.  Ethan's love for her seemed forced.  Maybe more sudden than forced.  But he couldn't explain to himself why he felt the way he did, so he automatically related it to love. Then out of nowhere, when faced with a terrible decision, she doesn't want to see him go... so she loved him.  The dialogues between the characters in the book seemed a little awkward more than anything.  A lot of old phrases that didn't translate well to the story as well as words of passion which were more like words of cheesy.  Those were really the only things in the book that I could have asked to flow better.  Other than that a nice read.

HEA: There is a hea at the end.  Which we all know is what I look for in my romance books.  It worked out differently than I thought it would.  But it was still kinda... forced.

Cautions: There is blood play.  Not a lot.  But they do use him drinking her blood as a sexual act.  Not overtly though.  There is barely sex in the book.  However, something to be aware of.

Of Wishes and Myths by Staci Brush

Title: Of Wishes and Myths
Author: Staci Brush
Publisher: Brush Publishing
Page Count: 284
Source (where you got the book): Romancing the Book
Rating: 5
Couple: M/F

Summary/Blurb: A little girl has grown up listening to stories her father told her.  When one night, she realizes that maybe they weren't stories- they are memories.  A young man stumbles upon an older man in the woods and is told to bring the body home to his people.  Without knowing why, the young man complies with this request.  Meanwhile, sisters are learning how to live without each other and finding true love.

Review: The book starts out with a ten year old's pov.  That's fine.  Sometimes it can enhance the story.  Not in this case.  I had to read the beginning a couple times in order to figure out how old the kid is.  She did not think and talk and write like a ten year old. She was a great character, but she wasn't ten years old.  I felt this took away from the story.  Then you meet the young man.  The telling of him running into the old guy was LONG.  I was about ready to give up before he found him.  Wandering around the forest makes for a great story when there is still something happening.  It makes it hard to stay enthralled when he is just wandering and hungry and thirsty for a couple day with no one but a dog to talk to.  Then you meet the sisters.  They were really mean to each other.  And the mood swings that were generated were... out there.  Then the dialogue between one sister and the love interest.  It was awkward.  It wasn't bad, just awkward.  And sudden.  I think that was the idea, but it almost seemed hurried.  One chapter the sister wondered if he even loved her, and in the next chapter she was talking marriage.  In fact, this was a problem through most of the book.  Things were hurried or they were really slow.  Not a lot in the middle.
However, the idea for the story was good.  Competing faerie courts that were alike with some key differences.  They way the alliance was made.  The human randomly being drawn in.  All that was good in theory.  It was the fleshing of the story that needed work.  I am sure with editing and expanding and cuts this can be a much better book.  But as it stands, it was lacking.

HEA: Yes, there is one.  Of course.  But it is a little strange.  The kid brings the happily ever after.  Without the kid, the girl might not have forgiven the guy.  It almost seems like they are together because of the kid.  And that's not right.  But maybe I have this totally wrong.

City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare

Title: City of Fallen Angels
Author: Cassandra Clare
Series: The Mortal Instruments (Book #4)
Age Group: YA to Adults
Rating: 9
Couple: M/F

Synopsis: A couple months after Valentine was killed, Clary and Jace are trying to live their own version of a normal life when evil attempts to hunt down Simon.  Relationships are tested and what you thought could never happen... happens.
That's really all I could put into the synopsis.  Cassandra Clare did not post anything about the plot of the book before it was released because it was so much better as a shock.  So I started reading the book without really knowing where it was going to go.

Review:  This was an AMAZING book.  Cassandra started writing the Mortal Instruments (TMI) as a trilogy.  After the conclusion book came out, she had ideas for a fourth- which would have been fine.  But then she went on a writer retreat and came home with ideas to fill THREE more books.  Now, while I waited for the first conclusion, now the happy endings I had before are nowhere to be found.  I guess this is a gift of a great author.  She was able to finish a series, decide to expand upon it, and make it happen without it seeming like it was strectching the story. I managed to fall in love with the characters all over again while meeting new characters and loving and hating them as much as the originals.  Not to mention the way she ties this in with her other series, the Infernal Devices, to make us want to read that one to make sure that we aren't missing anything.  I am now biting my nails in anticipation of book #5 which will not be out until NEXT May.  Dammit.

Cautions: Only the usual when you talk about a series.  Each one is tied together.  It really makes it difficult to understand everything if you have not read all of the books.  However, this being the beginning of a new expansion, it would be possible to read and understand it well without reading the others. However, you would be denying yourself the full potential to this book.
Also, the main couple is m/f.  But there is a gay relationship in the series and someone else I am pretty sure is a lesbian.  Now, this does not bother me.  I think it makes it extremely realistic as far as the diversity of people.  However, some people are not thrilled and it is something to consider when looking at this book.

Series: Already went over this a little.  But I will refresh.  This is #4 in a planned trilogy.  Yes, she expanded it.  Bitch.  Lol. Here starts a new problem with a new antagonist and new obstacles to get over.  Watch out, it'll get sticky.

HEA: No.  There is no hea.  It is book #4 (for like the seventh time).  However, at this point I am doubting a hea for the last book. O well.  This is what I get.  I will wait two years to rejoice or cry.... I need to stop reading series.

Misc. Information: As as far as doing this just for the readers, you couldn't ask for a better author.  A huge online joke made its way to her a few months before the book was to be released and she added in the joke.  And not in a way that would have made a difference, or you had to be a follower (because it didn't stand out- it flowed perfectly to the book) to get it.  Also, at certain follower intervels on her twitter, she will write different excerpts for us to read and enjoy.  Example- at 30,000 followers she is writing a scene for us that is not directly related to the series.  Amazing.  If I were an author, I would like to be one like her.

The Charmer by Autumn Dawn

Title: The Charmer
Author: Autumn Dawn
Series: #1 In the Dark Lands Series
Age Group: Mature Teens- Adults
Rating: 7.5
Couple: M/F

Synopsis: A woman named Jasmine goes to find her friend, Wiley, in the woods and runs in to a group of people that have taken Wiley and insist on bringing Jasmine to her.  Jasmine meets the exciting Keilor.  While being frightened out of her mind as she is led to a new world though a thin veil, she is ultimately intrigued as to what is going on.  After it is made clear to her that she will not be able to go home, she tries to find a place for her in the new world and someone to share her life with.  Both are not so far away.

Review: Now, I know that it seems that I spoiled something in the synopsis...  but I didn't.  SO much happens in this book, I felt like I had read the entire story and I was only on page 70.  By the end of the book I was like "What else could go wrong?!" While a great, great story and character and conflict I felt exhausted by the end of book.  Which is not my favorite way to end a book.  However, Keilor is an amazing hero.  Jasmine makes a frustrating but true to her own heart heroine while Wiley makes for a great best friend.  Even if things are not discussed in full detail because "being a friend for so long was a pain" that it was not needed made things difficult.  I am pleased with this book as a whole.  Details could have made it better but still an enjoyable read.

Cautions: Not a ton of things to be cautious of.  There was a kidnapping and drugs that would force a person to become aroused but there was never a discussion of rape.  They actually abhor it in the book for a very good reason that they explain. But other than that, a safe read.  I recommended it for mature teens simply because there is a lot of discussion of sex in the novel.  It is not very explicit but it is there and frequent.

Series: So I looked up this book online... and low and behold.  There is a series all about the Dark Lands.  While reading the description of the other books, I was decided to find out that it continued the story of the other secondary characters so that way they all have the HEA they deserve.

HEA: As of the end of the book, they had a hea.  There was no more attempts on her life, the babies were born healthy.  It was great.  However, the author left the reader with a big doubt on whether or not all of the people that  were involved with the plot were caught.  Maybe she addresses this in the continuation books, but this is where she left off The Charmer.

Time to Do by Kim Dare

Title: Time to Do
Author: Kim Dare
Series: Book #3 Perfect Timing (Each book is a stand alone)
Age Group: Mature Adults
Rating: 8
Couple: M/M

WHOLE ENTRY RIDDLED WITH SPOILERS.  BEWARE.
Synopsis: Best friends are attempting to clean their dorm room when Brennan stumbles across a list of things To Do Rigby has made.  Something on the list To Do is have sex with the man.  While Brennan is secretly in love with Rigby, he is shocked that Rigby has never mentioned this to him.  After confronting Rigby on the list, the friends decide that they must cross the things off the list in order to get things back to the way they were.  Things go haywire.  People get hurt.  True feelings are revealed.

Review: I enjoyed the concept of the book in all honesty.  That's what got me to read it.  However, making it come to life was a little bit of a stretch for me. Yes, I got that Brennan always loved Rigby.  I get that Rigby has always wanted to make sure Brennan is ok.  But going to far as to have sex with him to make sure your friendship stays alive was something I don't think the author was able to accurately portray.
All in all, this book is made up of great moments.  Finding the list.  Their first legit sexual encounter.  Brennan getting mad and telling Rigby exactly what he was thinking.  Their mutual confessions of love at the end.  These were all great moments with quite a few others in it that made it particularly enjoyable.

Cautions: There is manlove in this book.  A lot of it.  If this is your thing, great! If not, stay away.

Series: As I mentioned above this is part of the Perfect Timing series.  Kim Dare has said that there will be 12 in all.  Each of the books seem to be a stand alone.  There is no reason to read them all in order or even all of them as each can be purchased separately.  Not all are M/M either.  There is a few M/F if that is more your thing.  I definitely reccommend this author if you love sexual encounters in your stories, be is heterosexual or homosexual.

HEA: I am almost satisfied with the way the author ended the book.  Mutual declarations of love were announced and there was talk of staying together forever.  But the list was never put away.  Rigby starts making a new list and says that if they ever run out of things to do on the list they would re evaluate their relationship.  After Brennan wants to know how long Rigby thinks that will take, Rigby says forever as he intends to keep adding to that list iondefinitely.  Ok.  Kinda cute.  But I just would have been happy for forever and left it at that.  Somehow.  The characters made it difficult to have that ending, so I am sure the author was only able to coax this out of them.  But I dunno.
Maybe the author was aware of this.  Recently she published a newsletter on her site that had an update on these characters.  After graduating they are still together and very much in love.  though Brennan still has the same doubts he had.  Rigby seems to know this and tells him reassuring things that seem to make Brennan happy and confident in their relationship. Which in turn makes Rigby happy.  I think something like this was what I was hoping for at the end of the book.

Shadow Bound by Erin Kellison

Title: Shadow Bound
Author: Erin Kellison
Series: Shadow #1
Age Group: Mature Teens- Adults
Rating: 8.5
Couple: M/F

Synopsis: Talia has a unique gift.  Adam is in a unique situation.  Together they are able to face what it happening in the world with a little bit of help from Death.
I am purposely being vague as I think the story will be a that much of a better read.

Review: I first saw this story as a free Nook download in August of 2010.  It sounded interesting and it was free. Why not?
It wasn't until maybe a week ago that I was looking through my Nook and stumbled upon it again.  I started reading.  Unfortunately, I had to stop after the prologue but I was HOOKED. I was telling anyone that would listen to me about this book.  When I went back to it a couple days later, I threw a mini temper tantrum because I had to stop after a couple chapters.  Third times a charm.  I picked it up again and finished it.  I was a little disappointed that after an amazing opening there was a dry spell a little towards the end.  It didn't last long and it was probably only so noticeable because the beginning was THAT amazing.  But I stuck it out and was satisfied with how the book was wrapped up.

Cautions: There are references to sex, a few sexual scenes, references to rape, people dying in terrible ways.  Not for the faint of heart.

Series: After researching the crap out of this book after I finished it, I discovered a couple things.
First: It is not available in paperback yet... Yea.  A little weird.
Second: The second book was available a month after this one was released.  Again... a little strange.
Third: The third one comes out later this year and I cannot wait.  It looks amazing.
Expect a review of the second one entitled  Shadow Fall to be on my blog in the coming weeks.

**SPOILER**
HEA: For the characters.  Not for the world.  We are waiting on the hea for the world.  I am, as always, hopeful.
